The New Citizens Press Sponsors Unique Free Health Symposium
LANSING, MI — The State of Our Health: Through the Voices of Our People will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2008 at Bethlehem Temple (1518 Washington Ave., Lansing, MI). This day-long event features open community conversation between survivors of health issues, medical personnel and the community. The symposium is being held for the first time and is free.
The goal of the symposium is to provide a human sensitive forum that puts a face on the health challenges that we face in our communities. Every day people have experienced going through life threatening illnesses or situations and we want you to hear their stories. It will provide opportunities to raise awareness and the understanding that prevention, early detection and treatment of health issues affect us every day. Professionals and vendors will be available to provide information on health issues, life insurance, nutrition information in an Exhibit Area located in the gymnasium.
Registration will begin at 9.00 a.m. with the first session beginning at 9:30 a.m. and light snacks will be provided from Kraft.
On the itinerary is “Community Conversations: Lessons for Life” a series of small 30-40 minute sessions in the Chapel surrounding specific issues were stories are shared about health issues from survivors, family members and medical personnel.
Several Issues will be covered (subject to change):
1. Stroke/ Aneurysms
2. Heart Issues
3. Homelessness and Drug Addiction– Jolinda Wade and Christine Johnson – AIDS and Drug Addiction
4. Diabetes
5. Cancer
Our keynote speakers will include: Pastor Jolinda Wade, the mother of Miami Heat basketball phenomenon Dwayne Wade. Ms. Jolinda Wade was known as a drug user and seller, a fugitive, as well as a victim of homelessness. After seven years she sought help and was able to get clean. She started her first ministry while doing time in state prison. She is the Pastor of Temple of Praise church in Chicago, IL.
Ms. Christine Johnson, mother of basketball great Ervin “Magic” Johnson is an inspiration when she talks about how she has mastered the science of art and life, including many of the forces that cripple our communities such as her own family’s struggle with drug abuse and HIV/AIDS. To date, Christine has traveled around the world carrying the light of hope in her heart always willing and ready to say an encouraging word or providing what is needed. Her wisdom and the inspiring word of God is the foundation of her message that she gives in her motivational talks.
Both of these dynamic women and our other speakers, have experienced many challenges in life and will provide inspiring words of wisdom to the attendees.
There will be plenty of
information available and free giveaways.
The symposium will conclude at 4:30 pm.
