LANSING, MI — The Women’s Center of Greater Lansing is calling on community members, advocates, and survivors to attend a Michigan House Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday, December 17th, 2025, where lawmakers will consider legislation that would repeal the state’s Extreme Risk Protection Order laws, commonly known as “red flag laws.”
The hearing is scheduled for 10:20 am in Room 521 of the Anderson House Office Building, 124 N Capitol Avenue, Lansing.
Michigan’s red flag law, signed into law in 2023, allows courts to temporarily remove firearms from individuals who are determined to pose a serious risk to themselves or others. From a public health and sociological perspective, these laws functions as preventive intervention. For example, temporary hospitalization may be used during a mental health crisis to reduce immediate harm.
Legislation introduced by Representative James DeSana would repeal Michigan’s red flag law, removing what advocates describe as a critical safeguard for families, courts, and law enforcement. According to the Women’s Center, eliminating these options would significantly limit early intervention efforts designed to prevent violence before it escalates.
“The repeal of the red flag laws puts lives at risk,” said Rebecca Kasen, Executive Director of the Women’s Center of Greater Lansing. “These laws are designed to save lives, particularly in situations involving domestic violence. Michigan should be strengthening these protections, not rolling them back.”
The Women’s Center emphasizes that community presence at the hearing is critical. Civic engagement plays a direct role in shaping policy outcomes – especially when lawmakers are deciding on measures that affect public safety and vulnerable populations.
The organizations says that community presence matters. Lawmakers need to hear directly from the people who will be impacted by these decisions.
