YOGA MELTS AWAY STRESS

By Abigail Knowles Wolfe

Yoga has become an extremely popular form of exercise and relaxation here in the United States over the past decade. This scientific system of mental and physical practices or poses originates from India and is several thousand years old. The original purpose of yoga is to help those who practice it experience physical and mental health as well as promoting the achievement of their full personal potential.

More and more African Americans are discovering yoga and the health benefits this ancient practice can impart. Yoga helps fight and alleviate stress therefore improving the overall quality of life and health for those who practice it. True enthusiasts are able to practice yoga well into their senior years, keeping their bodies limber and flexible well into their 60’s and 70’s and there on up.

Postures called “asanas” are combined with deep breathing exercises called “pranayama.” Relaxation and meditation techniques referred to as “dyana” are also incorporated for an improved overall sense of wellbeing. It is most important to practice yoga under the instruction of a certified yoga instructor who has a great deal of experience in leading others. Certified yoga instructors have completed a few hundred of hours of professional training for certification thus making them better prepared to meet their students’ individual needs.

So whether it’s Hatha, Vinyasa or Ashtanga yoga you decide to do, be sure to pace yourself and introduce your body to this ancient practice gradually for the best health benefits.
