LANSING, MI — The Best, Brightest and Most Beautiful 2009 adult edition edition will be featured in the June 24, 2009 – July 4, 2009 edition.
We wanted to give the young and talented an opportunity to shine too. So our surprise this year is Ms. Kalani Davis. Each year we will feature a youth prior to every adult edition each June. It is the time when students are winding up the last of their assignments.
Kalani R. Davis who is 8 years old is an up and coming bright star in the community. She is a second grader at Pleasant View Elementary School in Mrs. Barb Houghtailing’s class. Kalani had to write a essay about what Lansing would be like in 150 years. Kalani worked diligently and won the contest for the second grade at her school. Then Kalani’s essay was entered into a contest for whole Lansing School District. Out of all of the second graders in the district, Kalani’s essay was picked to represent the second graders in the “Lansing 150 Parade of the Decades” held on May 16 to celebrate 150 years of Lansing History. The parade will featured approximately 150-200 entries.
Kalani received an award from the Lansing School District Board on May 21, 2009 and her essay along with the other contest winners will be put into a vault and will be opened in another 100 years.
“Kalani is a fabulous student. She is probably one of the most gifted students that I have taught. She brings a lot of background knowledge to the classroom. The information that she shares enhances her learning and really engages the other students. She truly has a complete student package. She knows a lot about everything,” said Houghtailing.
Kalani’s parents are Pierre and DeKeea Davis and her brother is Kiyan.
Kalani’s essay:
We have some problems in Lansing and the U.S.A. One problem we have in the world is our recycling problem. A way that we could fix it is we could build a robot out of our recycling utensils. We could invent a special kind of chip to make the robots come to life and help you around the house.
Another problem we have is over crowding. A way that we could fix it is a house that looks small on the outside but huge on the inside. Like brick on the out but mechanical on the inside. Electrical voices coming on as you walk in and out of a room. It could only happen in Lansing.
Another problem we have is our constant use of gas. A way that we could stop using gas is by having cars powered by water. You just have to dab some water on the car with one finger.
