James McCurtis Jr. is a native of Maywood, Ill., a suburb of Chicago. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1996 with a B.S. in Journalism and Mass Communications. He also graduated from Davenport University in 2005 with an MBA in marketing. He was a newspaper reporter for seven years and a television reporter for one year. He came to Lansing in 2001 and worked as a reporter for the Lansing State Journal from 2001 to 2005. He is now a writer/analyst for Democratic Communications for the Michigan House of Representatives. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., volunteered as a big brother for Big Brothers, Big Sisters; and he delivers meals to senior citizens for the Ingham County Meals-on-Wheels program. He is married to Cynthia McCurtis for five years, and they have a 20-month old son, James III “Jay”.
