LANSING, MI – Community members of all ages are invited to join Capital Area District Libraries’ (CADL) 2023 Summer Reading Challenge.
CADL’s Summer Reading Challenge is free to participate in and encourages members to read over the summer while earning prizes along the way. It’s also designed to help kids avoid the “summer slide,” a term used to describe the loss of reading ability and academic skills over summer break.
“Our goal is to ensure that the joy of learning does not end with the school year,” said CADL Assistant Director Jolee Hamlin. “Children who participate in our Summer Reading Challenge can enhance their reading skills, prevent summer learning loss and go back to school better prepared for a successful year.”
The challenge will take place from June 1-Aug. 5 and is available to toddlers (ages up to 3), kids (ages up to 12), teens (ages 10-18) and adults (18 and older).
This year’s theme is “All Together Now,” encouraging participants to celebrate friendship, community and kindness. The 2023 Summer Reading Challenge also marks 25 years of summer reading at CADL. To celebrate, CADL is challenging participants to “come together” and read for 20 minutes or more every day.
Readers will earn points by reading and completing activities. They will earn prizes as they go and be entered to win drawing prizes, including gift cards to ice cream and pizza shops, Meijer and more. Those who complete all levels of their challenge will also be entered to win grand prizes, such as gift cards to Launch Trampoline Park and Schuler Books.
CADL is also hosting several special events in celebration of summer reading, including visits from Potter Park Zoo and Howell Nature Center, magic shows, musical performances and more. Find a complete schedule of events at cadl.org/events.
