DETROIT, MI –  Kia continues to become a benchmark for the American auto industry. The Korean automaker has added a hybrid to the lineup of its already popular Kia Optima sedan.
The 2012 Kia Optima Hybrid I test drove had a 2.4-liter four cylinder Atkinson gasoline engine that produced 166 horsepower, a synchronous electric motor that produced 40 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque in full electric mode. The car had a six speed automatic transmission and it delivered 35 MPG in the city and 40 MPG on the highway.

Budget woes and date changes don’t slow down enthusiasm of annual Detroit winter event!

For the eighth straight year the annual Hockey In The Hood held at the Jack Adams Arena in Northwest Detroit and the Clark Park Ice Arena in Southwest Detroit was an enthusiastic success despite the change of venue, financial woes and the lack of out of state teams who travel to the city for the annual event.
 
The event, which started in 2004, is put on by the Detroit Hockey Association and the Clark Park Coalition during Black History Month to promote ethnic and racial diversity in the sport of hockey. William McCants, president of the Detroit Hockey Association, explained the reasons why of the date change and the absence of several out of state teams to the annual event.

In the 21st century, some people are trying to reverse that trend. The current farm to table movement promotes the idea of producing, purchasing and consuming food close to home, resulting in a boost to the local economy, a greener planet and a healthier population.

E. LANSING, MI — The Michigan State University Jazz Orchestra I, directed by Rodney Whitaker, will perform with guest artist Bobby Carcassés on Friday, March 16, 7:30 p.m., at Demonstration Hall on the MSU Campus.
 
In addition to the concert, Carcassés, a multi-instrumentalist who will be in residence at MSU the week of March 12-16, 2012, will offer a music workshop, a seminar presentation, and an art exhibit with an associated talk. The residency is sponsored by the College of Music, the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities, and the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies.

Dear Tamara:
 
My boyfriend and I recently had a heated argument. I was sure that after a few days things would cool off and we would go back to normal, like we always do. That was until a mutual friend told me that my boyfriend had changed his relationship status on Facebook. When I went to check, I found that he had “unfriended” me and completely blocked me from his page! Not only was I furious, I was embarrassed. 
 
We have a ton of mutual friends and he is friends with several members of my family. Needless to say, I have been getting a ton of phone calls and text messages from people wanting to know what’s going on and if I’m okay. I am not sure what to tell people; especially since I didn’t know that we had broken up. I hate that he put our business on blast. How should I respond to this? Should I change my relationship status as well?

WASHINGTON, D.C.–Rolanda Wade works as restorative aide and certified nursing assistant. To her patients, she is everything. 
 
“A lot of them can’t get dressed by themselves. They can’t wash themselves,” said Wade, who has been on the job 17 years. “Some of them can’t even feed themselves. We have to brush their teeth, do their hair, pick out their clothes for the day.”
 
The pay is low and injuries are common, but nursing care is a rare bright spot in the gloomy economic landscape, adding jobs at a steady clip. As the field has grown, so, too, have efforts to unionize. 
 
Those unionization campaigns are being fought on a shifting battleground, from massive chains to private homes. With boomers moving into retirement, the tensions aren’t likely to abate any time soon.

LANSING, MI — McLaren Cancer Institute, with locations in Lansing and across the state, is teaming with the American Cancer Society to offer free at-home colorectal cancer screening kits during March, National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.
 
The screening kits are being offered to people age 50 and older or those with a family history of colorectal cancer, which is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths, killing more than 50,000 Americans each year.
