Each year since the murder of Ruth Hallman in 2007 a memory Birthday Party is celebrated to honor her for the work she did in the Lansing community to make all neighborhoods a safer place to live, work and play. Ruth served as a Watch Coordinator, President of her Neighborhood Association and on the North Precinct Advisory Board lending her support and knowledge to enhancing our community.
Knitters from Mid-Michigan will gather from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday, February 12, 2011, to knit together and make items to benefit young adults at Child and Family Services of Lansing. The Knit-a-Thon will be held at Perspective2, 319 East Grand River Ave. in Lansing, Michigan’s Old Town.
LANSING, MI — The 2011 Promoting Active Communities Assessment has been launched! The PAC assessment is a free online tool that helps communities assess their built environment, policies and programs related to active living. Any city, village, township, or charter township in Michigan is eligible to register; all communities must register by June 15, 2011.

After the earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12, 2010, many orphans and school children were brought to Maxeau Balthazar’s yard in Port-au-Prince . Mr. Balthazar’s home was an obvious safe place to go because he had previously created a humanitarian services organization in Haiti.

By now everyone has heard about the bedbug epidemic that’s affecting everything from the fanciest hotel rooms to college dorms to cruise ships. In August, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a joint statement, which touched on the history of bed bugs in the United States, signs to watch for, and steps to take for prevention and control.

STARTING THIS WEEK: “THE SOCIAL NETWORK”: One of the best-reviewed movies of 2010, director David Fincher and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin’s superb drama recalls the roots of Facebook through the personal experiences that prompted then-college student Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg, in an excellent, complex performance) to develop what morphed into the wildly popular website. Its growing pains were considerable, though. Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, Rooney Mara, Josh Pence, Joseph Mazzello and Brenda Song also are in the sterling cast.
