East Lansing to Offer Cooling Centers Due to Expected High Temperatures

EAST LANSING, MI— In response to forecasted temperatures hovering in the 90s this weekend, the City of East Lansing is opening cooling centers at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center (ELHCC), 819 Abbot Road and the East Lansing Public Library (ELPL), 950 Abbot Road.

Both the ELHCC and ELPL are open for community members who need a break from the heat. The ELHCC is open until 9 p.m. and ELPL is open until 6 p.m. today (June 20).

The ELHCC and ELPL will continue to operate during normal business hours for the remainder of the heat watch, which is set to expire at 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, according to the National Weather Service. The ELHCC is open 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday, noon-8 p.m. Sunday and 6 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Friday. The ELHCC will be closed on Sundays in July and August.

The ELPL will be open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Friday. The library is closed on Sundays from Memorial Day to Labor Day each summer.

Community members are encouraged to spend time in cool locations and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the extreme heat and humidity. Other tips to keep in mind during times of extreme heat:

  • Don’t leave children or pets in a parked car for any amount of time.
  • Drink plenty of water, especially when spending time outdoors.
  • Give pets water and a cool place to rest.
  • Check in on those who may be more vulnerable to the heat, especially older adults, people who have chronic illnesses and those who are unable to keep their living space cool.
