LANSING, MI – Summer is here in full force! While the hot weather means fun trips to the lake and outdoor picnics, it’s important to remember summer can be a hazardous time for pets. Keep these tips in mind to ensure your pet’s safety and well-being during the summer months.
• Never leave your pet unattended in a parked car for any period of time on a hot day
• On a warm day, the temperature in a parked car can reach 120°F in a matter of minutes, even with the windows partially open.
• Your pet can quickly suffer brain damage or die from heatstroke or suffocation when trapped in high temperatures.
• Only have your pet outside for a short amount of time during the day
• When your pet is outside, be alert for signs of heat stress: heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid pulse, unsteadiness, a staggering gait, vomiting, or a deep red or purple tongue.
• Make sure your pet has access to cool water all day
• If your pet becomes overheated, your must lower their body temperature immediately –
• Move your pet into the shade and apply cool water over their body to gradually lower body temperature.
• Let your pet drink small amount of cool water or lick ice cubes.
• Apply ice packs or cold towels to your pet’s head, neck and chest only.
• Consult your vet
§ If you see an animal in a car exhibiting any signs of heat stress, call your local animal control agency or police department immediately!
