Black Diaspora

We, also came
On horseback and by wagon-train.
We huddled in the depths of ships
While songs of sorrow left our lips.
We lived in darkness in that deep
With fears untold to mar our sleep,
while tossed by unrelenting seas.
We found this land, this promised land.
We plowed , we sowed,
we hauled, we towed.
We worked this land and gave it form.
We slaved, we built, we fought.
We lived and laughed.
We prayed and loved.
We cried.
We died –
And left a legacy of hope.
