On Friday, June 5, 2026, at approximately 3:00 a.m., members of the Lansing Police Department were
dispatched to the 2700 block of Moores River Drive (Frances Park) following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers
located a 19-year-old female who had sustained a life-threatening gunshot wound to the head. The victim was
transported to a local hospital, where she remained in critical condition.
Jovanathan Mitchell was arrested at the scene and subsequently charged with Assault with Intent to Murder and
Felony Firearm.
On Wednesday, June 17, 2026, the 19-year-old victim succumbed to her injuries. As a result, the Ingham
County Prosecutor’s Office dismissed the original criminal charges and has now charged Jovanathan Mitchell
with the following crimes:
• Open Murder;
• Carrying a Concealed Weapon;
• Felony Firearm;
• Reckless Use of a Firearm
Mr. Mitchell was arraigned in the 54-A District Court on June 17, 2026. Bond was set at $800,000 cash/surety.
The case has been assigned to Judge Stacia Buchanan and upcoming court proceedings are scheduled as
follows:
• Pre-Examination Conference: Thursday, June 25 at 10:30 a.m.
• Preliminary Examination: Thursday, July 2 at 10:00 a.m.
The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
