In 2005, there were 270,000 people over age 100 in the world – a figure the United Nations expects will explode to 2.3 million by 2040 due to gains in nutrition, health and healthcare. By that year, the U.S. Census Bureau expects the proportion of people over age 65 will more than double from 2008 levels, to 14 percent of the world’s population.
Since December 11, 2010, the Downtown Lansing location of the Capital Area District Library has been the site of regular visits by openly armed members of the group Michigan Open Carry (MOC). The MOC members have attempted to openly carry rifles and handguns in CADL’s Downtown Lansing library. “Carrying weapons is in direct violation of CADL’s Code of Conduct and is also causing a great deal of alarm and panic among staff and patrons” according to Lance Werner the Director of CADL. Most recently, a staff member was so terrified that she was unable to work and had to be removed from her shift at a public service desk.

LANSING, MI — On February 19, 2011, two courageous women will be honored at the 10th Anniversary Celebration of The New Citizens Press as recipients of the “Staying the Course” Award. “Stay the course” is a phrase used in the context of a war or battle meaning to pursue a goal regardless of any obstacles or criticism. Addie Jackson is a breast cancer survivor while Phyllis Palmer is recovering from drug addiction one day at a time. The battle these women faced were different but these veterans shared similar journeys.

We have so much in common and I believe we are destined to be together. Though I love my husband, this new man makes me feel alive. And it has nothing to do with sex. In 1922, Emily Post published the first known list of traditional anniversary presents and gift categories. Originally, the etiquette guru listed gifts only for the first, fifth, tenth, fifteenth, twentieth, twenty-fifth and fiftieth anniversaries. By 1957, Post had expanded her anniversary list to include every year from the 1st to the 15th, and for every fifth year after that.
