LANSING, MI — Ten years ago Rina Risper published the first edition of The New Citizens Press newspaper.
Risper said, “With an iMac and many sleepless nights, The New Citizens Press’ premiere-edition was printed in 2002 and we’ve never looked back. It’s named The New Citizens Press because we are proponents of change – change for the better. Like so many of us, when we change for the better we become new. Our motto is changing the mindset in the ‘nu millennium’.”
Over the years, the newspaper has had three major style changes but the one thing that remains the same is its dedication to informing readers about important issues that impact individuals and families.
Risper said, “We provide our readers with a wide array of current topics, including human-interest stories, health, business, entertainment, finance, fashion and community events. We are also on Facebook and Twitter. Times have changed but people still expect news will be timely and worthy.”
Risper is currently working diligently to create a marketing and management team. She believes that the community makes up a newspaper and the majority of the readers should dictate what also goes into it.
She states that is one of the reasons why the anniversary party held on February 19, 2011, was more about the community showcasing their talents than the accomplishments of the newspaper. The event was a mixture of music and dance from local performers who shone on the stage. They also honored two women who overcame adversity. There are celebrations and events planned for the entire year.
Attendee Tarra Ray said, “I had a really great time. Everything was so beautiful. It was the type of event the whole family could have attended.”
