Based on “Winged Creatures,” a novel by Roy Freirich, “Fragments” is an intriguing and solemn tale of a group of survivors who attempt to piece together their lives after witnessing a fatal shooting at a local diner.
After a deranged man walks in and randomly shoots customers at a Los Angeles eatery, the five survivors of the tragic event find their lives have changed forever. All deeply affected by the shooting, they each react differently. Carla (Kate Beckinsale) is riddled with guilt for being unable to call the police due to a dead cell phone battery and starts to neglect her six-month-old baby. Charlie (Forest Whitaker), a recovering gambler who narrowly misses death now believes he is lucky and disappears from the hospital ending up at a casino and ignoring repeated calls from his worried daughter played by Hudson. Bruce (Guy Pearce), the local doctor is also riddled with guilt for allowing the gunman entry into the diner and starts experimenting with drugs. Dakota Fanning who plays the youngest victim, Anne Hagen, turns to her faith whilst her friend Jimmy (Josh Hutcherson) mentally shuts out the outside world.
