A positive community activist, Gina Wilson Steward has always been active in the community and utilizes the Telegram Newspaper to empower its residents through decisive information. Her analytical and inquisitive manner allows her to effectively encourage people to reach their potential and pass on positive energy to others. She continues to use her life as a testimony of perseverance and strength that only a reliance of spiritual grace can bring.

Gina Wilson Steward is the Publisher of the Telegram Newspaper that is based in Ecorse Michigan. It is a community newspaper that covers news in Metropolitan Detroit with a focus on the Wayne County communities. The Telegram has been in publication since 1944 and is the oldest privately Black owned community newspaper in Michigan. The Telegram Newspaper highlights positive community news, small business profiles, community events and important state and national news. Through the Telegram, she is helping to prepare the next generation of media personnel by establishing journalism internship programs with local colleges & high schools.

Gina has been the recipient of numerous awards and certificates some of which are: Community Award from The Men’s Club of River Rouge in 2008, Image Award for the city of Inkster in 2009, Received the Michigan Leading Ladies Award in 2013, The Media Award from the Detroit ARC in 2014, Received the W. A. SCOTT II Award from the National Newspaper Publisher Association in 2015, The Mentor of the Year Award from University of Michigan – Dearborn in 2015, recognized as a 2016 Outstanding Woman in Christ by National Christians in Action, received the Community Leadership Award from RRHS Community Program in 2016, received the Media Award from the Charles Wright Museum in 2016, The Women’s Informal Network – One of the Most Influential African American Women in Metropolitan Detroit in 2021, the 2021 Community Health Champion from Western Wayne Family Health Center and the 2022 Woman of the Year by the Zeta Phi Beta Zeta Nu Chapter.

In addition to her publishing duties and responsibilities, Gina’s commitment to the community is evident in her service on several boards and involvement in several community groups. Her current community relationships include: President of the Downriver Delta CDC focusing on encouraging local communities to work as a region, President of the NAACP Western Wayne Branch whose mission is to fight for the civil rights of people in 24 cities in Wayne County, Executive Director of The PEN Enrichment Center that focus on improving the literacy rate of persons in the community, Board Member at The Guidance Center whose focus is on Mental Health programs and Board member of the Michigan Press Association that shares information throughout the state.

Gina Wilson Steward is an alumnus of University of Detroit Mercy where she earned a MBA in Organizational Behavior, Tuskegee University where she earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering and she is a proud graduate of River Rouge High School. She has been an active member of Pentecostal Missionary Baptist Church in Romulus since 2001 where she is a proud usher greeting the community. She is the daughter of Robert and Regina Wilson, married to Keith Steward and is the mother of Alexandria, Krystal and Michael, Godmother to Allan Gilliam and Larnell Hill, Kerbi Niang and she has nine grandchildren.
